In 1999, two Danish gentlemen - Jan Andersen and Poul Madsen - decided to join forces as they wanted to create a brand that made a difference in the design industry - the result of this vision became the Normann Copenhagen brand. The first years are always a tough test for a new brand - this was also true for Normann Copenhagen, but in 2002 the turning point came when they launched the NORM 69 lamp. NORM 69 was a huge success for Normann Copenhagen and within five years another 38 products had been launched under the Normann Copenhagen name. In the years leading up to 2009, the idea of adding furniture to Normann Copenhagen's range began to blossom and in 2009 the furniture became a reality for Normann Copenhagen. Normann Copenhagen is a brand that makes bold designs with an exciting twist and a high focus on functionality.
Normann Copenhagen is located in Østerbro in Copenhagen - here Normann Copenhagen has a 1700 m2 showroom and shop in one and the same store. This is Normann Copenhagen's flagship store where the Normann Copenhagen team has really succeeded in creating a unique environment where the entire Normann Copenhagen range is represented alongside other leading Danish and international brands. The ambition to create the most innovative and inspiring store was high, but Normann Copenhagen succeeded and the Normann Copenhagen store has won several awards for being one of the best design stores in the world.
Normann Copenhagen has grown so big that Normann Copenhagen is responsible for all processes starting from idea and design to production and until the final result is ready at a Normann Copenhagen store or retailer. Normann Copenhagen is sold in more than 70 countries, of which the main markets for Normann Copenhagen are Scandinavia, Germany, England, Benelux, Italy and the USA. Normann Copenhagen products are sold in the best retail stores in the world, stand-alone design stores, museums and online stores.
Normann Copenhagen - Design process.
Normann Copenhagen collaborates with many Danish and international designers. Each of them expresses their own unique look through Normann Copenhagen products and each of them has their own way of working with a design process. Normann Copenhagen is a company that can accommodate the different ways of working, resulting in designs that would otherwise never have seen the light of day, let alone on the scale that Normann Copenhagen products are sold. The designers working for Normann Copenhagen are between 27 and 90 years old and the only criteria for a designer to collaborate with Normann Copenhagen is that the product must be eye-catching in at least one of the following: in use, in design, in color or material.
Normann Copenhagen - The original idea.
Every day Normann Copenhagen receives 5-10 new design ideas from talented designers who hope that their idea could fit into the Normann Copenhagen range. Sometimes a designer manages to get through the eye of the needle at Normann Copenhagen and their product becomes part of the Normann Copenhagen range. A range that is not boring, because Normann Copenhagen never settles on a line and has no requirements that all products must be in a certain direction or style. A Normann Copenhagen product simply has to be original and easy to understand.
The main rule that Poul Madsen and Jan Andersen from Normann Copenhagen work from is that every Normann Copenhagen product must enrich the design world with something new.
Designer Highlights from Normann Copenhagen.
Danish Jacob Rudbeck and Andreas Lund, each the owner of their own design studio, met when they were both out teaching design. They decided to work together and one of their biggest successes is the Bell lamp from Normann Copenhagen. It is seen all over the world because it fits in both private homes and businesses. The Bell lamp from Normann Copenhagen has been especially used in restaurants around the world - one of the reasons is that Normann Copenhagen produces it in 4 sizes.
Jacob Rudbeck and Andreas Lund want to carry on the Danish design heritage in the form of industrial craftsmanship - where the final design should have personality without being loud. The Bell from Normann Copenhagen is a perfect example of this.
Carsten Schelling, Ralf Webermann and Sven Rudolf met while studying in Hannover, Germany. After all three had worked for different design studios, they decided to start their own studio - it was called Ding3000. Ding3000 has designed 4 different products for Normann Copenhagen, and common to all 4 products is that they have a smart function. Ding3000 says that they work from a romantic notion that a designer is an 'inventor' who creates designs that improve the world.
The products for Normann Copenhagen are all colorful products that can be packed down to a minimum. This is convenient for both stores and customers. For Normann Copenhagen they have designed: the Normann Copenhagen nutcracker, the Normann Copenhagen whisk, the Normann Copenhagen trivet and the Normann Copenhagen glass coffee table. The latter is called Ding Table - Normann Copenhagen produces the table in 6 versions.
Gry Fager is educated in glass and ceramics and at the Danish Design School. She has designed a highly functional and beautiful porcelain series for Normann Copenhagen. Normann Copenhagen spotted her talent before she had even graduated. Gry Fager's approach to design is that what she creates should originate from everyday objects such as Normann Copenhagen porcelain, which is an excellent example - it consists of plates, butter trays, egg cups etc. 'Grandma', as the series for Normann Copenhagen is aptly named, is the first of Gry Fager's designs to go into production.
Helga Sigur-bjarnadottir graduated from the design school in Milan in 2008 - at the same time she worked for a design studio in Icland. Helga Sigur-bjarnadottir works with both entire design projects and individual products. For Normann Copenhagen she has designed the Stone Hooks hooks. They fit well into Normann Copenhagen's exciting universe, as they are so simple that the customer just has to go and see if the stones are real - they are. Normann Copenhagen immediately saw the potential in the stone knobs that look like they are floating from the wall. Normann Copenhagen delivers 2 pieces in a box.
Since Javier Moreno graduated from EASD Alcoi in Spain in 2005, he has been all over the design and development world. He has done everything from ''product and 3D design'' at a toy factory to being Product Manager for a furniture company. His vast experience makes him an exciting designer to watch. For Normann Copenhagen he designed the Flip mirror - a Normann Copenhagen product that went straight in and became one of Normann Copenhagen's top 10 selling accessories. Normann Copenhagen's Flip mirror has deep roots in history and this is certainly one of the reasons why it has become so popular. Normann Copenhagen currently produces the mirror in 3 colors, but it is not unlikely that Normann Copenhagen will launch new exciting colors for the timeless mirror.
The German design studio KaschKasch started up in 2011 and from the beginning they have been a smokin' success because their style is straightforward. It fits well into modern society whether you're in Scandinavia or Southern Europe. Their design is graphic, tight and straightforward and this approach fits well into Normann Copenhagen's range. For Normann Copenhagen, the 2 gentlemen behind KaschKasch have designed the Cap Table lamp. Normann Copenhagen produces the lamp in 4 colors that fit in with the times and, not least, they also fit into the rest of Normann Copenhagen's colorful universe. The shape of the lamps is geometric and despite the graphic look, Normann Copenhagen's Cap Table lamp still takes you back in time.
Internationally known Krenit bowl from Normann Copenhagen.
The Krenit bowl belongs to the golden age of Danish design and has not been available to most people for more than 50 years, but after Normann Copenhagen made a deal with Herbert Krenchel in 2010, it has again become possible for design lovers to buy the Krenit bowl. With the utmost respect for Herbert Krenchel's work, Normann Copenhagen has not changed the dimensions or quality of the bowl. However, in 2010 and 2012, Normann Copenhagen launched new colors for the bowl and also launched several sizes of the popular bowl. Today, Normann Copenhagen has the exclusive rights to the Krenit bowl, which has not become less popular since its relaunch. The original bowls continue to be sold at auctions around the world for prices far higher than Normann Copenhagen's new price. The Krenit bowl from Normann Copenhagen is often used as a gift idea.
